It aims to: enable the practitioner to assess liver function using biochemical markers, other tests, signs, symptoms and disease knowledge; identify which pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters of a drug are likely to be affected by different types of liver disease; and consider the impact of a drug’s side effects on a patient with liver disease. This practical guide covers background information on liver function, the principles of drug use in liver disease and includes a section of worked examples of commonly asked questions. The major aim of this book is to demystify splenic pathology for nonspecialist consultants and trainees in histopathology. The interpretation of pathological changes in the human spleen provides a significant challenge to the skills of even the most highly trained histopathologists. This comprehensive account of the most important and frequently encountered pathological conditions affecting the spleen is highly illustrated in color throughout with numerous detailed macroscopic and microscopic specimens. Emphasis is placed on the importance of adequate clinical information and technical preparation of splenectomy specimens in obtaining the best possible histopathological assessment of the tissue. A systematic, analytical approach to interpretation of pathological changes is used throughout the book. This text should enable readers to feel confident in their assessment of significant processes within the spleen. This volume will serve as an illustrated atlas, bench manual, text, and reference source.

Product Description
Parenteral nutrition is the standard of care for patients who are unable to maintain nutritional status via the gastrointestinal tract. New techniques in this therapy are giving patients with intestinal failure the time they need to achieve maximal intestinal rehabilitation and return to a more normal and productive life.
Edited and written by an international group of experts in the field, Intestinal Failure and Rehabilitation: A Clinical Guide presents the most current information regarding the prevention, diagnosis, care, and management of patients with intestinal failure. Organized in a logical manner, the book opens with a review of the basic principles and concepts, and progresses into discussions on diagnostic evaluation using a variety of techniques, and treatment plan formulation. The next section addresses dietary modifications, medical management, the use of trophic substances, enteral and parenteral nutrition, surgery, and transplantation. Following a discussion of special considerations, such as pediatrics and enterostomaltherapy, the text concludes with outcomes and future directions for research.
This volume is devoted solely to intestinal failure and all of the information is supported by evidence-based medicine. It greatly enhances understanding of this area and aids in the care and rehabilitation of individuals with intestinal insufficiency.

Product Description
This monograph, aimed at graduate students and researchers in biology and related areas, deals with lectins, an exceedingly important class of diverse and widely occurring proteins that bind carbohydrates. They possess the unique ability to decode the information encoded in carbohydrates and thus to act as recognition determinants in diverse biological processes, both normal and pathological. Their study is therefore inextricably linked to glycobiology, a subject now in a stage of explosive growth. Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1989, great strides have been made in several areas of lectin research. Numerous lectins have been isolated from a variety of sources, and their functions in infection, in inflammation and in immunity, both innate and acquired, have been clarified. In addition, the three-dimensional structures of close to 200 lectins, and of many of their complexes with carbohydrates has been elucidated, providing an insight into the molecular basis of their specificity. As a result, the book is about 470 pages long (three times the size of the first edition), with over 200 figures and some 30 tables. The book starts with an overview of lectin research. This is followed by a survey of the occurrence of lectins in nature and a detailed description of their properties, with emphasis on specificity, structure and interaction with ligands at the atomic level. The biosynthesis and genetics of lectins are then discussed, as are their numerous applications in biology and medicine. A summary of the nutritional effects of lectins follows, and finally their functions in nature are dealt with. The book should be of use to anybody who wishes to learn more about this unique and fascinating class of proteins and to use them for a variety of purposes.
