Medical Book Description:
Sepsis is a very important public health problem. It is widely acknowledged that the severe inflammatory response syndrome/severe sepsis paradigm fails to stratify sepsis patients adequately. This book reviews in detail how sepsis should be managed on the basis of a novel approach to staging. The PIRO (predisposing factors, infection, response, organ dysfunction) model was first proposed at the start of the decade on a theoretical basis and has now been translated into a practical approach for use at the bedside. It is loosely based on the TNM staging system for cancers, with points being allocated to each of the four aforementioned key characteristics of the septic process. The proposed PIRO framework facilitates evaluation of factors that are important in the pathogenesis of severe sepsis and in the development of treatment strategies. This book clearly explains the advantages of the PIRO approach in different settings and will be of value to all practitioners concerned with the management of sepsis.
Medical Book Description: Widely considered the “gold standard” textbook for respiratory physiology, this compact, concise, and easy-to-read text is now in its fully updated Eighth Edition. New student-friendly features include Key Points boxes at the end of
Medical Textbook Description: A set of five softcover books. Book 1 covers Gastroenterology and Infectious Disease. Book 2 cover Pulmonary Medicine and Nephrology. Book 3 covers Cardiology and Rheumatology.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in Western countries. It also provides an archetypal example of how inherited predisposing genetic variants may interact with an environmental influence (smoking) to modulate individual cancer risk.
The Molecular Genetics in Lung Cancer describes how the new techniques, methods and approaches of molecular genetics have been used to unravel the complexities of the mechanisms underlying lung tumorigenesis by analysis at the DNA, RNA and protein levels with potentially important implications for tumor classification, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment as well as providing new insights into how lung tumors arise and how they progress to malignancy.
Description:
Written by well-known experts in field, this is the first book dedicated to dealing with the single most challenging management issue in long-term steroid therapy. Overcoming Steroid Insensitivity in Respiratory Disease reviews important new advances in therapeutics and provides the clinician with the most up to date information on one of the most significant therapeutic challenges to effective management of these diseases. This unique book is an invaluable resource for all postgraduate students and specialist physicians in pulmonology allergy and asthma. It is also of interest for workers in biomedical and pharmaceutical research.
Since their discovery in the 1950’s, the therapeutic use of corticosteroids has been the mainstay of treatment for many chronic inflammatory diseases. Their utility has been tempered, however, by the increasing risk of side effects with higher dose therapy.
In the treatment of airways diseases, side-effects can be limited by targeted delivery to the airway and lung, and significant progress has been made through the use of increasingly selective molecules, and through a variety of lung targeting strategies. Moreover, the recent developments in our understanding of the molecular and structural mechanisms of action of corticosteroid actions have suggested that it may be possible to develop new corticosteroids with intrinsically different pharmacology.
A combination of these developments will enable the design of agents with an enhanced therapeutic index and this book, aimed at specialists in pulmonology, provides the clinician who prescribes corticosteroid therapies with the most up-to-date information on one of the most significant therapeutic challenges to effective management of chronic inflammatory diseases.
First book dedicated specifically to this major management issue for respiratory and general physicians.
Taking a visual approach, Pulmonary Infection: An Atlas of Investigation and Diagnosis presents ready-to-use information in an easily accessible format. With coverage ranging from tuberculosis, a much-studied disorder which continues to spread in urban communities around the world, to the lung infections acquired in the course of hospitalization and treatment, the atlas provides a wide-angle view of pulmonary infection. Drawing on the illustrative resources of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, the editors have selected graphic images that supply examples of rare and typical manifestations of these disorders. Each chapter covers etiology, presentation, investigations, and therapy and includes a bulleted list of conclusions. The large number of illustrations accompanied by detailed captions make it a visual guide to respiratory infection.
