I am currently using this book in my hematology course. It is incredibly thorough, that’s for sure. However, it’s way over my head. I stopped regularly using it after the first couple of months of class and used other materials. They don’t tell you that the book is for lab techs, med techs, and pathology residents. So, if you are a med tech or a pathology resident, this book has all the information you will need and use. However, for just a lab tech, you will either be fast asleep, highly discouraged, or your head will be spinning from all the information. The text itself is highly complex with no delineation between information for the different levels of health care workers. Also, the binding is terrible. Half our class’s books have fallen apart. The publisher did send new ones, but one spine split immediately. So the quality of the book binding is quite poor, but you wouldn’t know that from the price!!! In closing, this book is incredibly useful as a reference and will aid you in your studies, but it is definitely NOT for the faint of heart (academically, I mean). This is not a ‘hematology for dummies’ book.

This book has become almost a standard text. But it has problems. For one, the index fails to list much of what’s in the book. For instance, kallikrein, an important cytokine in coagulation, is not listed in the index, though it is talked about in the text. Abbreviations are introduced without a hint of what they stand for. The complexities of hemostasis are not well-explained. And the process of clotting is not well-organized. A good editor would have helped the authors produce a better book.
