Product Description
Understanding the immune system is crucial for both medical and bioscience students, with new research revealing yet more secrets year on year. Many books offer in-depth introductions to the subject, but How the Immune System Works remains uniquely popular for its personable and practical overview of the nuts and bolts of the immune system.
This third edition provides a perfect introduction to the essential principles of the immune system, covered in humorous but highly informative ‘lectures’ accompanied by clear and accessible illustrations. It is perfect for exam preparation or as an enjoyable overview of a difficult subject. Both students and instructors will welcome the clarity and authority that Lauren Sompayrac brings to this timely revision.

I never write reviews, but I thought it is very important for me to write a review. I bought this book because I really had a difficult time understanding immunogy and it seemed like a worthwhile book to get. THe book starts out great, but then it just get too complicated. I I think this book is best for those with a average background in immuno. I am sorry to write this review, but I have to be honest.

Sompayrac’s “How the Immune System Works” is a great Cliff Notes-style guide to immunology. He manages to cover almost all major components of the immune system in this little, 100-page book. It is written in a very colloquial fashion, with lots of easy metaphors and analogies (he states in the introduction that he wanted to write a book in the same fashion as he would give a lecture). However, because it is so small, it is lacking in some regards: for example, the classical complement pathway is not covered. My biggest gripe with the book is that despite its functional usefulness, Sompayrac does not address much in the way of evolution (with the important exception of immunopathology), and really leans towards the intelligent design end of the spectrum with constant references to “Mother Nature’s design…” or “Mother Nature doesn’t want…”.
Take home message: great intro or refresher to immunology, but be prepared to roll your eyes if you’re a graduate student.

I got this book for a graduate class I am taking in immunology; although, I didn’t really need it, it was helpful.

A fine introduction for a novice. Mr Sompayrac is a good author who has
the student in mind. The discussion is informative and presented in a style that a student or interested lay person will appreciate.

I’m a pharmacy student at old Rutgers. The immunology section taughtin my Pathophysiology class was lacking, to say the least. I was suggest to read this book by Lauren M. Sompayrac… and it’s the bomb! Really easy to read, very organized, and in a really strange way, quite fun. … this book is really really excellent.
