Product Description

From the foreword by Dr. Douglas Kerr, Director, Johns Hopkins Transverse Myelitis Center

“The Autoimmune Epidemic by Donna Jackson Nakazawa is an astounding book….It is the kind of book that will rivet you and scare you. It will make you angry. It will amaze you with the courage of some of the people described in the book…The Autoimmune Epidemic is every bit as compelling as Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle…It is also every bit as necessary as An Inconvenient Truth….

You will leave this book with no reservations about the veracity of the conclusions: put simply, there is no doubt that autoimmune diseases are on the rise and increasing environmental exposures of toxins and chemicals is fueling this rise. The research is sound. The conclusions unassailable….

Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a necessary first step. Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a life-altering event. It needs to be.”

No new information, boring and “technical” without offering any help to those who suffer. If you’re writting a paper about the overall epidemic (ie, that these diseases could be caused by toxins, etc) this is your book. Otherwise, Stick to books on your specific disease for information and help.

‘The Autoimmune Epidemic’ can be considered to be an excellent primer on autoimmune diseases. The author, who certainly knows her stuff, reviews the potential causes of these diseases, testimonials of those afflicted, and overviews areas of research and potential treatment alternatives. I certainly learned a lot.

However the book has flaws. The author has a tendency to be repetitious. She also focuses too much of her attention on lupus, which is neither the worst nor the most common autoimmune disease. Psoriasis, which afflicts four times as many Americans, is mentioned only once. And I wish she would have spent more time on alternative therapies, such as diet.

Bottom line: not exactly groundbreaking but certainly a competent review of what has become an epidemic of illnesses in America. Recommended.

Yes this book is timely but it does not address the solutions we as physicians can not practice in our current health care model. As physicians in practice the system as well as the pateare forced to treat symptoms and that is what created the epidemic in the first place. It is the short sited use of medicating our patients, overuse of antibiotics, ignoring clear signals of serious progressive disease to use palliative treatment for cost saving and expediency that got us here in the first place. It’s a numbers game treat the patient quick, don’t do extensive lab tests to truly understand the syndrome.

I dropped out of that model years ago and now can stop the insanity. Examine, understand, treat and retest monthly if necessary – until I’m able to slow or reverse the progression of these syndromes. In order to do this I now work for my patient not their insurance companies, yes I see a lot less numbers but I can go to bed at night knowing the patients are responding within months even weeks. The sad part of this is those millions and millions of patients without proper treatment lose cognitive function so they can’t complain or picket.

I recently received this book and found it informative. I would recommend it to others with an interst in auto-immune issues and how to combat their effects.

There’s a lot more things in the environment that can do you in than you would know without reading this.
