Product Description
Techniques on how to gain greater fluidity of movement while playing to improve the quality of the experience are offered in this manual for serious piano players. This book encourages musicians to develop a broader understanding of the involvement of the entire body in playing-and the strains playing places on the body-by focusing on body mapping to increase awareness of the body’s function, size, and structure. Ways in which piano, organ, harpsichord, clavichord, and digital keyboard players can eliminate or prevent carpal tunnel syndrome and other debilitating conditions without traditional medical treatments are also explored.

I would recommend “What Every Pianist Needs to Know About the Body” to any student, teacher, or hobbyest of the Piano or Organ. It is very helpful and informative of just how are body is structured, where our points of balance are, and how we utilize those points to enhance our playing. It discusses key information about how we should think of our bodies as we play in order to produce the best music possible, and especially to avoid, or recover from injury. Through understanding of the concepts herein, one can attain balanced playing where ones body is unified with their kinesthetic sense and with the music itself, as they play with ease and satisfaction.

This book should be a staple in the library of every pedagogue. It is designed in a way that you can learn the basics or delve into all the details (which is important for your students who might want to browse the book). Roberta Gary’s section is also a big help for organ students.

I can only repeat what others have said about the usefulness of this book for keyboard (and other) players. Straightforward, easy to read and understand, this work is an absolute must for anyone interested in improving their playing, reducing fatigue and avoiding injury.
